The conversation

On the shores of Mozambique’s Inhambane Province, Vilanculos Beach Lodge combines tropical gardens, thatched bungalows and views across the Indian Ocean. General Manager Angela Caratelli believes it is the warmth of the people—not simply the setting—that makes a visit memorable. She talks about the local artists whose work finds its way into each room, the joy of watching her team grow and the coastal experiences that invite guests to slow down.

“Beautiful surroundings draw guests here; the warmth of the welcome is what we hope they remember when they leave.”

Chapter 01

The Indian Ocean sets the pace

What makes this hotel—and its surrounding destination—different?

Angela Caratelli

There is something about looking out over the ocean here that makes you take a breath and slow down. We have tropical gardens, traditional thatched bungalows and an infinity pool overlooking the water, with the Bazaruto Archipelago within reach.

But the people give the lodge its character. Beautiful surroundings draw guests here; the warmth of the welcome is what we hope they remember when they leave.

What local traditions, ingredients, art, or experiences do you incorporate into the guest experience?

Angela Caratelli

Mozambique is part of the everyday experience here. You see it in the thatch and timber of our bungalows, taste it in the fresh seafood and local flavours in our restaurant, and find it in the handmade crafts in our on-site gift store.

We also put a great deal of thought into the décor. Each piece is chosen specifically for the room it belongs in, with heart and care. We buy from local artists, bringing their creativity into the lodge while supporting the community around us.

We help guests explore through experiences such as traditional dhow safaris and cultural outings. Our team brings another, very personal connection to the destination through their languages, local knowledge and hospitality.

Chapter 02

The warmth of the welcome

Can you share a memorable story about a guest, employee, or community member that captures the spirit of this hotel?

Angela Caratelli

For me, the story that best captures the spirit of the lodge is the growth of our team over the last ten years. It has been such a pleasure to watch them develop professionally, grow in confidence and take pride in what they do.

They are an amazing team, and I could not do this without them. Their passion and dedication to exceeding our guests’ expectations make all the difference. The care they bring to each interaction is what gives the property its spirit and makes a stay here feel personal.

If you could describe the hotel in just three words, which would you choose—and why?

Angela Caratelli

Warm, peaceful and personal.

Warm because of our people, peaceful because of the setting, and personal because we want guests to feel known and welcome throughout their stay.

Chapter 03

Care in every bungalow

Which is your favourite room in the hotel, and what makes it special to you?

Angela Caratelli

I honestly do not have one favourite, because each room offers something special. Our B units have interleading rooms, making them ideal for groups of friends travelling together or families with children. The suite is wonderfully spacious, perfect for a family of four, and has the most amazing view. Our standalone A units are lovely for couples or solo travellers.

What makes them all special to me is the care that has gone into them. Every piece of décor was chosen specifically for that room. We put our hearts and souls into making each space feel personal, choosing individual pieces and buying from local artists. Each room carries a little of that care and a connection to our community.

Chapter 04

A stay at your own pace

What will be a highlight for everyone planning a staycation at your hotel?

Angela Caratelli

A quiet moment beside the infinity pool, looking out over the Indian Ocean, is hard to beat. For guests who want to explore, an excursion to the Bazaruto Archipelago is a wonderful addition.

What I like is that you can make the stay your own: get out on the water, enjoy a spa treatment, linger over lunch or simply settle into the gardens with a book.

Our connection with Goodwill Mozambique is also very close to our hearts. We recommend cultural tours with Dionisio, a local guide, including a stop at Goodwill to meet the children and spend some time playing games together. It is a meaningful way to connect with the community, and an experience that can leave you with a heart full of love and hope.

What is your ideal day in the area, from morning until evening?

Angela Caratelli

I would start with a beach walk and breakfast beside the pool, then head out for an island excursion and some snorkelling, conditions permitting.

Back at the lodge, I would leave time for a quiet rest before dinner. Fresh seafood, a drink and good company would be a lovely way to finish the day. I would keep the schedule fairly loose; part of enjoying this coast is giving yourself time to take it in.

Chapter 05

Finding beauty at low tide

What nearby hidden gem do you return to again and again—and what makes it special to you?

Angela Caratelli

For me, it would be the shoreline at low tide. It is easy to focus on planning a big excursion and overlook what is right in front of you. The changing water, exposed sand and boats give you something different to notice each time. Sometimes a simple walk is the best part of the day.

Chapter 06

Leading with care and purpose

What do you do to help employees grow into future leaders?

Angela Caratelli

For me, it starts with listening and giving people room to take responsibility. I want team members to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and learning from mistakes.

My main focus is helping the team understand the true meaning of hospitality. When someone pays for a holiday and receives the basics they booked, such as accommodation and transfers, we have fulfilled a business transaction. Hospitality asks more of us: it is about how we make people feel, the care we show and the personal connections we build.

I want our guests to leave feeling as though they are leaving a little piece of their hearts behind. When the team understands how their own actions can create that feeling, they grow in confidence and learn to lead with care and purpose.

What is the most important leadership lesson that working in hospitality has taught you?

Angela Caratelli

You have to look after your team if you want them to look after your guests. That means being present, listening properly and setting the example yourself, especially on difficult days.

Hospitality has also taught me how much the small things matter. A thoughtful gesture or the way you handle a concern can shape someone’s memory of their entire stay.
