Quick picks — Upscale: Sheraton Nouakchott Hotel (international brand hotel) · Beach: seafront auberges near the Atlantic · Budget: auberges and guesthouses

Nouakchott is Mauritania’s capital, a young city between the Atlantic and the Sahara. A short break here is about a comfortable hotel, fresh fish from the Port de Pêche, a sunset walk on the beach and a look around the markets. Mauritania is an Islamic republic, so alcohol is generally not served and modest dress is appreciated.

Best areas for a Nouakchott staycation

Tevragh Zeina is the upscale district with embassies, restaurants, supermarkets and many of the better hotels. City centre around the Grand Marché and the main mosques has practical hotels and markets. Seafront along the Atlantic has auberges, beach restaurants and the Port de Pêche, where pirogues land their catch in the late afternoon. Airport road properties suit early departures from Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC), north of the city.

Which Nouakchott staycation suits you?

Couples: a Tevragh Zeina hotel with a good restaurant, or a seafront auberge for sunsets.
Families: larger hotels with space, parking and on-site dining.
Beach: a seafront auberge; swim only where it is safe, as currents can be strong.
Budget: auberges and guesthouses.

When to go and getting around

The most comfortable months are usually November to March. From about April to October it is hot, with dusty winds and occasional short rains in late summer.

Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC) is north of the city; allow around 30–45 minutes to the centre. Prices are in Mauritanian ouguiya (MRU), and card acceptance is limited outside larger hotels.

How to choose your Nouakchott hotel

Compare the total with breakfast and check air-conditioning, water pressure, parking and Wi-Fi. Many smaller properties prefer cash, so confirm payment options before you arrive.
